How Ultrasonic Cleaners Work on Jewelry

Ultrasonic cleaners restore the beauty of mounted and loose jewelry by using high-frequency sound waves transmitted through water or a cleaning solution. These waves create microscopic cavitation bubbles; when the bubbles collapse, they produce heat and pressure that dislodge dirt and debris - even from areas behind settings and other hard-to-reach places.

Important Safety Notice - Not All Gems Are Safe for Ultrasonic Cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning is powerful, but it is not suitable for every gemstone or treatment. Never clean valuable pieces with ultrasonic methods without first confirming the gem type and any surface treatments. Impulsive, broad use may damage treated or fragile stones.

Do NOT use ultrasonic cleaners for:

·Gems with filled surface fractures. Some diamonds, emeralds, and other stones are fracture-filled (e.g., lead-glass filled diamonds, oil/resin/wax-filled emeralds). These fills improve clarity but are not permanent and can be damaged or removed by ultrasonic action.

·Organic materials. Materials with porous or organic structure are vulnerable to heat and chemical exposure in ultrasonic baths. Do not place pearls, coral, tortoiseshell, ivory, shell carvings, jet, or amber in an ultrasonic cleaner.

·Impregnated or surface-coated gems. Stones that have been stabilized or impregnated with oils, waxes, plastics, or resins (common in jade, lapis, malachite, and opal) should not be ultrasonically cleaned.

·Heated or color-enhanced stones. Gems that have undergone heat treatment or other enhancements can be sensitive to ultrasonic vibration; treat with caution. Star rubies and star sapphires, for example, are best avoided in ultrasonic baths.

·Heat-sensitive gems. Whether treated or not, certain gemstones are sensitive to temperature and rapid thermal changes and should not be cleaned ultrasonically. These include tanzanite, feldspar (sunstone, moonstone), fluorite, chlorite, kunzite, lapis, malachite, opal, topaz, turquoise, zircon, and several others.

Safe Alternatives & Care Recommendations

·For fragile gems and antiques, use a mild detergent formulated for fragile stones or lukewarm soapy water. Standard or harsh cleaners may damage delicate materials and surface treatments.

·Inspect settings before and after cleaning. Ultrasonic vibrations can loosen stones or damage tight prongs and bezels. Ensure stones are secure before using any cleaning method.

·Use baskets or racks to prevent direct contact with the tank bottom, and always follow manufacturer guidelines for temperature and duration.

Quick "Do / Don't" Checklist

Do

Research the gemstone type and any treatments before ultrasonic use.

Use appropriate, gentle cleaning solutions for delicate pieces.

Inspect settings and secure loose stones prior to cleaning.

Don't

Ultrasonically clean fracture-filled, oiled, or resin-filled stones.

Clean organic or porous materials (pearls, coral, amber, ivory).

Use ultrasonic cleaning on heat-sensitive or thermally unstable gems.

Why Use an Ultrasonic Cleaner - with Caution

All these warnings might make ultrasonic cleaning seem risky - but when you know your gems and follow manufacturer guidance, ultrasonic cleaning is fast, effective, and safe for many types of jewelry. The key is knowledge and care: confirm treatments, use correct solutions, and choose the right frequency/power for the task.
